Additional Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living (Shambhala Classics) Information

Start Where You Are is an indispensable handbook for cultivating fearlessness and awakening a compassionate heart. With insight and humor, Pema Chödrön presents down-to-earth guidance on how we can "start where we are"—embracing rather than denying the painful aspects of our lives. Pema Chödrön frames her teachings on compassion around fifty-nine traditional Tibetan Buddhist maxims, or slogans, such as: "Always apply only a joyful state of mind," "Don't seek others' pain as the limbs of your own happiness," and "Always meditate on whatever provokes resentment."

Working with these slogans and through the practice of meditation, Start Where You Are shows how we can all develop the courage to work with our inner pain and discover joy, well-being, and confidence.

What Customers Say About Start Where You Are: A Guide to Compassionate Living (Shambhala Classics):

Pema Chodron is such a good illustrator of ideas. She can really break things down so they make perfect sense.

She really makes you think about the life you are now living. If you want to live a more peaceful and compassionate life this book is a must. I really enjoyed this book. You can live a better life. I enjoyed this and even purchased another for a gift for my sister. I think Pema Chodron is an excellent writer and you can relate to what she is saying. I highly recommend this book. She is one of my favorite authors.

The author is very experienced at Zen meditation and does a good job of translating the original language of the "slogans" into modern English. A very helpful book.

Acting out on them is no good, but repressing them isn't either. This is the first book I've read by Pema Chodron, and I really got a lot out of it. Pema offers advice and practices for using afflictive emotions to wake up and increase your compassion for others. Like every other human being, I struggle with emotions like anger, resentment, envy. and for so long, I just didn't know what to do with such feelings. Her writings are never harsh or judgemental, and she encourages readers to be gentle and compassionate with themselves and the world around them. I highly recommend this book, and plan on reading more from this author.

As a person that's recently had to deal with personal challenges and obstacles, I've found Pema Chodron's advice and thoughts both enlightening and empowering. I also commute a fair amount and it's perfect to listen to her on the way to work or on the way back from a rough day of work. This work is full of simple stories that show you the power of each and every one of our day-to-day experiences. She takes the very stuff that makes life difficult and uses it as an example of how to either change or be comfortable with where you are. I've purchased a few of her other books on "tape" and have enjoyed listening to them all. Some of the advice you may already have heard from a friend, but through her stories she really brings home the point and helped me to internalize another type of "medicine" that's helped me to live my own life right where I am. I hope you enjoy Pema as much as I have.
